Selecting a web designer: 4 things to consider before you build

Your business website is one of the most important aspects of your web presence. Having a powerful, efficient and effective business website is crucial for success in today’s marketplace. Though you might be tempted to take a DIY approach – like most things in life – you generally get what you pay for. Here are 4 things to consider when selecting a web designer.

4 things to consider when selecting a web designer

  1. Their body of work – Take a close look at the design company’s portfolio. Their body of work should be as diverse as possible. A great design firm will be creating powerful designs that meet the unique needs of each client they work with – not just using a cookie cutter approach with a nice looking template but ultimately just churning out a bunch of sites that all look the same.
  2. Web experience – There some amazing designers out there, but when it comes to your website you need to choose someone who has significant web design experience. Designing for the web requires a completely different skillset than designing for print, and the skills don’t necessarily translate. Your website has to do much more than just look great, so it’s important to find someone with the right kinds of experience.
  3. Service guarantees – Before you sign on the dotted line with any new company you should find out the specifics of their customer service policies. Your relationship with your website is going to be a long-term one, so you need to know what support you’ll get after the initial design period is over. For instance: what kind of tech support do they offer and how much does it cost?
  4. Their references – A well established and reputable web design firm will have a list of past clients who can vouch for their work. You can get a good feel for the end result of a project by the final product, but the quality of the final product doesn’t tell you if a firm is always shifting deadlines, or is never available for meetings, or can’t communicate well. References from past clients will help you see a more complete view of the firm.
