Sometimes called “retargeting”, remarketing is a fantastic way to get sales for your business, and even if you don’t know exactly what it is we can pretty much guarantee that it has happened to you. Essentially what we’re talking about is when visitors to your website see ads for your products or services on other websites, even after they’ve left your site. We promise it’s not creepy – it is ingenious! After all it makes excellent business sense to target campaigns to people have already shown a little interest right?
So how does it work?
Humans are a busy bunch, and we tend to get distracted pretty easily. Remarketing gives you the opportunity to recapture the attention of a distracted customer. Maybe they got a phone call, or their Facebook pinged and stole their attention away from you. Normally that would be the end of your interaction with them but when a potential customer visits your site, their visit is recorded on their device by way of a ‘cookie’. Remarketing technology uses that cookie to “remind” a potential customer of your products or services using ad-space on other websites within the Google Display Network (GDN).
How to remarket successfully
The secret ingredient for remarketing is excellent graphic design. If your designs aren’t effective then it doesn’t matter where your banners are, or how often customers see them. Beyond that, remarketing technology allows you to control all sorts of things – like how many times a day a potential customer will see your advertising – and the way you use it will depend on what type of product or service you’re selling.
If you’re selling a physical product stick to hero shots in your banners, if you’re selling a service you should be following customers around with your telephone number so that when decision times comes they don’t even have to think about it. If you’re a subscription service consider using graphics that highlight a free trial offer for a limited time.
